FAKE ALERT: Doctored video of MP CM Shivraj circulated to claim he wants people to become addicted to alcohol

A video of Madhya Pradesh (MP) chief minister (CM) Shivraj Singh Chouhan going viral on social media shows him asking his subordinates to increase the sale of liquor in the state to such an extent that more and more people consume it and remain in inebriated condition.
In the video Chouhan can be heard saying, “ What is this excise department up to? Why are they sitting idle? Increase the distribution of liquor in the state to such an extent that people of the state get addicted and remain intoxicated.
Twitter user Shiraz Alam posted the video with same claim

A youth Congress leader Rishiraj Tiwari too posted the video with the same claim

The video is a doctored version of a byte given by Chouhan in January this year. It is being digitally-altered to make it look like Chouhan wants his administration to increase liquor distribution in the state.
In the original video, he can be seen rebuking the then Congress government in the state for increasing the sale of liquor in the state.
On going through the verified handle of ‘Office of Shivraj’, we found the original video posted by it to debunk the viral doctored video.
The handle posted the original video with a text that read, “Strict legal action will be taken against whoever is sharing the fake video released by Congress’ dirty tricks department on Twitter and WhatsApp. This is the original video. There is no place for cheap politics in MP!”
In the original video, Chouhan can be heard saying, “What is this excise staff doing? Why does it not stop the sale of alcohol? Will you now distribute liquor in every house? Consumption of liquor will make the younger generation hollow and ruin the state.”
“The Congress government wants liquor to be consumed so much that the poor farmer forgets about the promised loan waiver, the youth doesn’t seek unemployment allowance, the poor should not talk about Sambal Yojana, no one asks for money from the CM (Kamal Nath). They want to distract people. If the CM (Kamal Nath) is so ethical then he should conduct de-addiction campaigns,” he continues.

The original video was posted by Chouhan via his official Twitter handle with a comment that reads, “There’s trouble everywhere. Farmer is unable to sell, his debt is not being waived, youth is not getting unemployment allowance. Development works are also stalled. In such a situation, the government is intent on ruining the younger generation by opening liquor shops. We will not keep quiet and continue to fight.”

Times Fact Check has found that an old video of Shivraj Singh Chouhan when Congress’ Kamal Nath was MP CM is being doctored to falsely claim that Chouhan wants the excise department to increase sale of liquor in the state.
