Tamil Nadu police use Covid-19 screening as trap to nab absconding culprits | Chennai News

COIMBATORE: Covid-19 has turned out to be a boon to the Tamil Nadu police as they have managed to nab two accused men in the city by inviting them for health screening.
In the first case, a missing case was registered against G Premkumar, 29, who sent his nude images to a WhatsApp number dedicated for public grievances by Ramanathapuram district police.
Following this, on Saturday officials from Ramanathapuram district introduced themselves as health officials to the accused and invited him for a Covid-19 screening. Premkumar was with his father V P Ganesan, 60. After Premkumar got into the car with the officials, they informed Ganesan that they would soon call him to let him know about Premkumar’s health.
However, Ganesan did not receive any call and when he tried to reach his son, Premkumar’s phone was switched off.
Ganesan immediately lodged a complaint at Saravanampatti police station in Coimbatore. After inquiries, Coimbatore police confirmed that Premkumar was picked up by the Ramanathapuram district police for sending nude photos to a WhatsApp number handled by them.
Premkumar was a teacher at a coaching academy. He was an engineering graduate and taught high school and higher secondary school students. Premkumar lived with his family in Balaji Nagar in Coimbatore district.
In another case, on June 15 Coimbatore police officials acted as health department staff and arrested a driver, who worked for the PRO at Coimbatore collectorate. S Suresh Babu, 49, cheated people of Rs 25 lakh by promising a government job. He was later transferred to Dharmapuri collectorate.
Sub-inspector Jamuna along with two others went to Ramanathapuram in Coimbatore district and introduced themselves as health department officials.
They met Suresh Babu and asked him to take up Covid-19 screening as he returned to Coimbatore from Dharmapuri. Suresh too agreed to go along with them. The officials, however, took him to the city crime branch office. That was when Suresh realised that the woman was a police official.
A police source said the accused might have absconded if they approached them as cops. “Hence, we adopted this new strategy to nab them,” the source added.
