In the end, it is the charismatic performances of Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi that keeps us rooting. Vijay dances like a dream, and puts his coolth to good effect in the college scenes. He also manages to sell the moments when he has to offer advice. With many heroes, these portions might have come across as preachy, but here, they just feel right. And Vijay Sethupathi manages to steal the show. His casual acting style only elevates Bhavani’s cruelty. The final confrontation between the two actors has a couple of rousing moments, helping end the film on a high note.

Overall, Master lives up to the expectation and pre-release hype and Lokesh manages to give a hat-trick of films that are most certainly above par, and close to amazing. Master is indeed the mass-commercial entertainer that we’ve been waiting for, for almost an year.

There are ample amounts of ‘Thalapathy’ moments and it is uplifted by him to a large extent. But as a complete film, you may or may not be satisfied. In a nutshell, Master is nothing but the good vs bad routine that is treated in a different manner. There are a lot of stunt sequences in the movie and you feel that the actions are overdone at places. Certain fight sequences in the second half could have been chopped as they don’t lend any impact. The college sequences in the first half do not have any highs. The lorry/bow and arrow sequence goes overboard and makes Vijay, a larger-than-life character. The film does not allow you to breathe a sigh of relief as stunts keep happening continuously one after another. Also, the emotional factor (which is the reason for Vijay’s reformation) does not hit you hard. The pace of the movie is also quite a concern.

Ultimately, Master is a different Vijay film as well as a different Lokesh film. Thalapathy just keeps growing from strength to strength while Lokesh leaves his mark in the ‘mass hero’ genre too. He makes a ‘kutty’ cameo appearance in the end credits and proudly showcases his Kamal fan image again by listing Nammavar (1994 Kamal starrer) as part of Master’s filmography. Despite its pace issues and the length, ‘JD’ Vijay and ‘Bhavani’ Vijay make it worthwhile. Expecting more interesting ‘mass’ films from Lokesh.Verdict: Good fun for this festival season

Master gets going right from the word go, and presents interesting moments one after the other. With the arrival of Vijay on screen, the screenplay gains momentum which never dips at any point. Lokesh Kanagaraj has proved himself to be a fanboy and has delivered Master as a celebration of Vijay the star, with plenty of goosebumps mass moments for fans to celebrate and rejoice. Pitting another most loved hero Vijay Sethupathi as the antagonist against Vijay, Lokesh Kanagaraj has etched his character in such a way that he entertains with his unique villainy. With numerous positives aside, Master has its share of flaws as well, as the movie has a very straightforward plot and proceedings without much twists and turns, with most of the characters not getting enough scope to perform. With several extended, unnecessary moments, the second half is lengthy and drags at places. Nevertheless, it’s a Vijay – Vijay Sethupathi show, perfectly orchestrated by Lokesh, who’s very well supported by the rich technical team All said, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Master is a fanboy ode to Vijay, that makes this festive season even more festive, with a mass action treat for Thalapathy Vijay fans. Don’t miss this entertainer from Vijay and Lokesh Kanagaraj.
